Struggling with anxiety

Anxiety is most often characterized by an inner sensation or outer experience that frightens you. Another important characteristic is that your anxiety makes life difficult, often by preventing you from carrying out otherwise common or important acitivities. For instance when you find it necessary to avoid situations that merely remind you of what you are afraid of.

 Typical symptoms og anxiety:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Feeling of numbness in extremities
  • Trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Emotional lability
  • Irritability

How does therapy help me feel less anxious?

Treating anxiety entails reducing the fear to a realistic level. This is done by examining subjects such as:

  • What makes you afraid (which might not be entirely clear)
  • When/where the anxiety starts
  • What initially caused the anxiety
  • What are the catastrophic thoughts about what might happen if you could not avoid the object/situation.

The answers might be entirely clear to you or they might not be. Both scenarios are common.

Exposing yourself to what makes you afraid (as long as this is objectively safe to do) is extremely important in the treatment of anxiety. Just as important is that this happens in the tempo and in a way that allows for you to feel as safe and comfortable as possible.
